GOODS FROM GERMANY.

NEW ZEALAND IMPORTS. MILLION POUNDS WORTH IN 1914. [BT TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAI, COBBESPONDEOT.J Wellington. Tuesday. - The Minister for Finance. Sir Joseph Ward, in the course of a speech to-night, made an interesting statement about NewZealand's recent trade with countries tha* are now enemy countries. Until. r 1914, the country of origin of goods imported was never known in New Zealand, but after 1914, the country of origin'had to be stated. For the seven months of 1914, prior to the outbreak of war, the value of goods the Dominion imported from Germany was £1,015,000, from Austria *«3,000, from Turkey £30.000, and from Asiatic Turkey £39,000. The Customs' officials estimated that if the war had not broken out the importations from present enemy countries for the whole year would have been worth £1,700,000. Sir Joseph. added that be thought these imports would not be restored after the war , was over, and if the 50 per cent., extra tax now proposed by the Government as a duty on enemy goods were not sufficient to keep these goods out, the tax could be increased. 9
