ONEHUNGA'S EFFORT.

BAZAAR TO BE HELD.

COMMITTEES APPOINTED.

BOROUGH TO BE CANVASSED.

The part that Onehunga is to take in regard to the present patriotic campaign 85 discussed at » public meeting held in the Coronation Hall last evening, and presided over by the Mayor, Mr. J. Rowe. Ihe Mayor said that Onehun-A had contributed about £1000 to all the calls that had been made upon it since the war started. Of this amount, about £650 was for the Patriotic Fund, or 2s 2d per head of the population of Onehunga. He did not think Onehunga wished other districts to support their boys or their dependants. Bv doing their duty they could honestly ask for a fair share of the general fund for their own soldiers. The Borough Council, lie said, felt that a monster bazaar could be held, and that both the local picture proprietaries should give one day's proceeds from their shows, and also that the friendly societies, Yacht Club, and other local bodies should help. He moved that the bazaar be held. The Question of Baffles. Canon Haselden said that he would support a bazaar if there were no raffles, or gambling, or anything else that "would break the law of the land. He strongly advocated straight-out giving*. The Rev. J. Dukes and Mr. J. Simpson, manager of the Onehunga Woollen ) orks, also supported a personal canvass tor subscription.. Mr. Simpson said be was sure that £1000 could be raised by this method. Cancn Haselden moved as an amendment, That, this meeting is of opinion; that the necessary amount required should be raised by direct giving, and respecttully suggests that the Borough Council takes steps to canvass the town to obtain the money." The amendment was seconded bv the Rev. D. D. Scott. Mr. H. J. Davies supported . direct giving. He believed that 50 men could be found in Onehunga who would give &20 each. He would make one to give £20. b Mr. G. L. Taylor thought they should nave a large committee of business men £20 CanVaSS for money. He would give Mr. T. H. Pardington favoured both motion and the amendment. The Mayor said the beet and straightest way ' D raising the money in Onehunga would be for the council to strike a rate of a halfpenny in the £. Then they would get at the men who would not give generously. (Hear, hear.) In answer to the Rev. S. J. Campbell, the Mayor said if a bazaar were decided upon it would be for, the council to say if there would be raffles. But he expected there would be raffles as a section of land had been given and also a house, which would have to be raffled for. The amendment was lost by 60 votes to 40. The motion to hold a bazaar was then carried on the voices. 1 Appiontment of Committees. Mr. H. J. Davies next moved, " That a committee be appointed by the meeting 1 to manage the bazaar." .The Mayor moved as an amendment, That steps be taken to raise the sum re- j quired as Onehunga's share toward the provincial fund of £250,000, and that for this purpose two committees be formed who shall each raise as much as they ran in the way it seems best to each." Th« amendment was carried with but one dissenting vote. The Mayor and council and Canon Haselden, and the Revs. J. Dukes. S. J. Campbell, and D. D. Scott, were appointed a committee to canvass for subscriptions. The Bazaar Committee consists of the Mayor and council and all who wish to join it. The Mayor stated that the council would act as the executive of both committees and the town clerk would be the treasurer in both cases.
