ROWING.

NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP.

TRAINING FOR THE RACE.

[bt telegraph. — It ESS association.]

Waxgaxtji, Friday. I Interest in the race between W ebb ■ and , Hanuan for the New Zealand sculling championship. now less than a week on. is growing. and the chances of the two ' uca a £® being freely discussed. It may be mentioned that Hannan's challenge to Webb was issued some three months before the outbreak of the war. but the negotiation* were prolonged through various reasons, tnottgn !>olh men were eager for the match to do ratified. The result was that the principals were placed in the position of having to so on with the negotiations a"" conclude arrangements as soon as possible to row ana settle the argument th»t had arisen. During the past week or so Hannan has put in a lot of good work, rowing generally twice a day. On Sunday last he did some practice at starting by mutual conscnt. having a * fl >- known local amateur as pacemaker, naunan showed fair pace off the mark, but his strong forte is hi.« ability to row at » very solid pace over the full distance. laat is to say. he u mere of a stayer than a sprinter. He is very tit. as hard as nails, and is a powerful young fellow. with heaps of grit. one who will stick to it to the end. Ho rowed down yesterday from his camp above Upokongajo to the Dublin street bridge, and then went back rowing steadily all the way. Webb has been doing some lively rowing during the last few days, putting in a fast spin over a mile and a-haif yesterday. He appears to be rowing as well as ever, but it will remain to be proved on the day whether he has " come back." If he has. then. Hannan will need to bo a., wonderfully good man to win. seeing that his experience is very limited compared to that of Webb 8. However. Hannan has whatever advantage there may be in being some five years younger, and this is expected in some quarters to turn the scale in his favour. WEST END CLUB. The annual meeting of the West- End Rowing Club will be held at the boathouse, St. Mary's Road. Ponsonby. on Wednesday next, at 8 p.m. A full attendance of members. active and honorary, is requested. The business of the meeting is to receive the report and balance-sheet, elect officers, ana transact any other business that may be introduced. The annual report and balance-sheet states that the present membership of the club is made up as follows—Life. 6: honorary. 27: active (including those on the absent members' list). 118:—total, 151. The finances of the club are in a very sound condition. During the year the balance of the debenture issue, amounting to £:10 and interest thereon, was met. and the sum of £161 17s 3d for new boats paid out of revenue, and there still remains a substantial- cash surplus to be carried forward to next year. The total receipts for the season, as shown by the balance-sheet, amounted to £317 17s 2d. and expenditure £303 4s Id. leaving a credit balance of £14 13s Id. By the payment ot the debentures, the club now stands entirely free of debt, and the committee considers that the balance carried forward to next year's workings, though smaller than in previous years, is in every way satisfactory. The usual club fixtures were held during the season, and although the entries were fewer 1 than in previous years owing to tho J&rse number of active members on military service. much keenness was displayed among those t»V-rn— part. Nine sets of fours, one of doable sculls. one of pair oars, and one of single sculls were held. The club was "'At Home" on two afternoons, on Patron's Day, when trials were held for prises presented by Mr. T. Peacock, and on the occasion of the trials, held for trophies donated by the late Mrs. J. Clark. The club was 1 represented at the following regattas:— Mercer. _ Xgaruawahia. and the Auckland Provincial Championship . Regatta, gaining 1 four firsts and seven seconds. Tho annual prize night, held on July 3 in the All Saints' Parish Hall, again proved a pleasing and popular function, being attended by a large ' gathering of members and friends. During the winter months a series of fortnightly > euchre evenings and dances were held in the boathouse.. The success of these even legs resulted in a substantial gain to the club's funds, besides providing a source of pleasant social intercourse among members and their friends. In connection with these functions, a patriotic night was held on August 11. and this proved very successful, the net proceeds, amounting to £3. being handed to the secretary of the Side and Wounded Fund. The appeal to service was notably responded to by past and pVesent members of the club, the roll of honour now including x total of 40 names. Of this number, four were killed in action, five were wounded, and 23 are on active service. In addition to these eight members are now in training, and a further six members have been accepted for service, and are waiting to be called upon. The club's roll of honour now 'comprises the following names:—Pie. C G Adxms. Serjrt. F.W. Aickin. Sergt. T. R. Aickin. Pte. V. Bailey. Lieut. W. A. Bow 2?*' V E - }*■ Blur. dell. Pte. A. E. Carlaw.
