NOTES FROM AVONDALE.

The finishing stages of the Avondale Cup were certainly exciting, and though Ca-stalia appeared to win nicely she was really doing her best-, and all credit for her victory must be given to Deeley, who handled her in an expert manner, taking full advantage of every opportunity offering during the race, and finally being rewarded with success, due entirely to his superiority as an experienced horseman.

Fionnuala met with a very bad passage in the Avondale Cup, and was sent back twice over the last five furlongs when trying to secure a favourable position. Had Chaplin not been pocketed on the rails at a stage which was the most critical, the sister to Kaween mast have gone closer to taking the big end of the purse. She is bound to carry heavy support first start to-day. Royal Irish was finishing on well in the Avondale Cup on Wednesday, and was one of the 'inhicky candidates during the running. It is questionable whether the hard race of Wednesday will improve him or not for today's race, but it is certain that the son of Soult is going to play a prominent part in handicap events again this season when thoroughly strung up. Bluestone was going so well prior to meeting with mishap in the Avondale Cap that fee 18 not likely to be lacking supporters if started at Avondale this afternoon. He has still to win over a nine-furlong course* but credited himself with being second over ten furlongs to Sakama when that mare captured the Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie a few seasons back. The soft going and turns at Avondale should be to his liking. | Independence, the full sister to Hadj, trained by W. G-. Irwin at Ellerslie, claims i a quiet reputation, and on that account will probably find plenty of support in the Nur- | sery Handicap at Avondale this afternoon. | Deeley may be found in the saddle. When Glucian fell in the Maiden Plate on Wednesday he suffered injury to his hocks, which caused his withdrawal from thus afternoon programme. W. By an, who rode the Gluten gelding, also suffers from a bruised shoulder, which may keep him out of the saddle this afternoon. Sea J3e*il. who was made favourite for the Maiden Plate at Avondale on. Wednesday, was never really prominent. The Seaton Delayal chestnut is engaged in the Guineas this afternoon, in which event he may. shape better in the small field. His stable com* panion, Analogue. _ will also be saddled up. The latter is a bit on the small side, and won a race early last season as a two-year-old when known as Worley the Rnut. Lion D'or rushed out smartly in front of the Maiden Plate field on Wednesday last, but want of racing was probably the reason why the son of Cuirassier failed to go on when the pinch came. The aged gelding should turn out a useful hurdler if put to the game later on. Rewenga is in with the hack class at Avondale this afternoon, but Her showing in the Flying _ Handicap was anything but impressive, and certainly not suggestive that the daughter of Marble ' Arch and Tauhei will be seen in a favourable light this trip. Ihapuna, who won hack races last season, is to be stepped out to-day to contest the New Lynn Handicap, and rumour has it that the chestnut is well. Ihapuna would only need to be at his best to race prominently with the lot engaged. Gallupin certainly threatens to turn out a fair performer this season, but has plenty of weight, which remark also applies to Multifual. The latter was ridden a very indifferent race on Wednesday, but still had so chance with Sonltane, who simply plaved with the moderate opposition.

Glissando has had more racist; this season than any other of the Avondale Guineas field, and for that _ reason may claim some attention for the mile event- However, she failed so badly when carrying the support of her party in hack events at Martoa, that the class would indeed be bad if the daughter of Oblitrado could gain the honours. There is nothing engaged with pretensions to class, though Colonnade, a member of E. J. Rae's string, may be elected to the post of favourite. Colonnade ran unplaced in the Flying Handicap on Wednesday. She is a daughter of Marble Arch and Tauhei. and having been responsible for some fair track work at EUerslie. is bound to come in for some attention when her condition is realised.

Fagot, by finishing on strongly in second position to Black Northern in the open hurdle event on Wednesday, is bound to come in for a lot of attention when business opens on the Monut Albert . Steeplechase this afternoon. Fagot is a good fencer and will stay. Fireaway has a good following, while Luperin. Randa Mist, and Transfer are a trio that may be referred to as likely to make th© pace merry for a time Toreador did not like being tested by Guiding Way in the Islington Welter at Avondale, and gave tip the struggle over the last few furlongs. They were not a good lot that Guiding Way defeated, the time registered for the nine furlongs being slower than the hacks registered earlier in the day. Prince Soult was a long way bat . at one stage of the Flying Handicap at Avondale on Wednesday, but finished on nicely in fifth position, suggesting that be should shortly be at his best.

Ranza Mist, classed as by Lock Ranza— Gipsy, was racing prominently when he unseated his rider about half-way through the running of the Grey Lynn Hurdles at Avondale on Wednesday, and can safely be looked for to-pay his way at country fixtures during the seas in. He paced it with the leaders, and was decidedly unfortunate in meeting with mishap. He will probably start in the steeplechase this afternoon, but will not be forward enough to lost out the three-mile journey with some of the more seasoned candidates.

Crispeen, who is engaged in the Kinsslaud Hurdles at Avondale this afternoon, will come in for some attention by reason of his commanding appearance. He can jump well, and has given evidence in his work of the possession of pace, but may need a lot of racing before being caught ready to show his best <■ King Lupin treated his Bst 111b lightly in the Flying Handicap at Avondale on Wednesday, and simply rushed off to the lead with the speedy Goldfire, disposed of the latter at the, home turn, and ran away with the stake in' easy fashion over the business end from the gallant effort of the diminutive Gold Necklet. King Lupin is as good a. sprinter as ever he was, and Hannon turned him out in great heart.

Loyal Arch, who was made favourite for the Flying Handicap on Wednesday, was never a good beginner, and was giving the leaders a big start when the straight was reached, but made up a lot of leeway before the deciding line was passed. She should bo improved by the race, and can be expected to shape well over middle distances, for it is evident she has lost none of the pace which characterised her efforts as a two-year-old.

Waiutu was going on nicely in fourth position in the Avondalo Stakes, and should improve with_ the race. This daughter of Carl Rosa—Waiotahi is engaged in the Nursery HandicaD this afternoon, in wheh" Lady Klysian and Rekanui, the place-getters in the Stakes, are bound to claim some attention. There is some doubt as to which of J. George's candidates will contest the President's Handicap at Avondale this afternoon. Either will carry a fair share of support, especially Glenroy, who seems suited over sprint distances. Crown Pearl finished fourth m the Flying on Wednesday, and with the winner (King Lupin) and third (Loyal Arch) out his prospects could not be entirely disregarded this afternoon if startedGoldfire has always run better in his second attempt at a meeting, and may be looked for to show up even better to-day at Avondale than he did on Wednesday. However, he may still want a race or two to be caught at his best. Appin has been schooled over country at idler she. but has not impressed greatly, though he has cleared the obstacles safely.
