The general conditions of Trentham camp were taken note of by Dr. A. W. Averill. Anglican Bishop of Auckland, during a visit which he paid to the camp while in Wellington last week.

"I feel bound in honour to say.'" the bishop remarked, "that, although it is perfectly true that the camp, as it 'was. ■was most unsafe and unsatisfactory, and most dangerous to. the health of the 7000 men encamped yet, every step has been taken, and is being taken, to make it sanitary, healthy, and dry. I was very much interested in the excellent roads which have been laid down throughout the camp, with cement channelling on the sides, also in the clean and comfortable •huts for the men to sleep in. As far as the arrangements of the camp go, I don't think there is any possibility of any danger arising in the future, such as took place last winter.

" Hundreds of men were working in the camp, improving it in every direction. The thought that struck one most forcibly was that if what is being done now had been done 12 months ago there would have been an enormous difference in the health of the soldiers. One could not help reflecting that probably by the end of the war the camp would be in perfect order."
