CAPTURE OF TRENCHES.
SUBSEQUENT RETIREMENT.

Rome, September 12.
A communique states that an Italian detachment, after a spirited bayonet attack, seized portion of the trenches on the Santa Maria heights, in the Tolmein sector, but owing to heavy artillery fire, asphyxiating gas bombs, and jets of burning liquid, they had to return to their own trenches.
