FIRE AT KAWAKAWA.
BUSINESS BLOCK BURNED.
LOSS OVER TWO THOUSAND. LBT TELEGRAPH.—OWN COnRESPOXDEKT.} Kawakawa, Thursday. A block of buildings owned by Mrs. Kirkpa trick and occupied by A. McCready, bootmaker. J. A. HaU, auctioneer, and Wallace and Co.. storekeepers, was completely gutted by fire at 4.30 this morning. The cause of the fire is a mtystery. Miss Moss, of the Star Hotel staff, was the first to give the alarm, being awakened by the breaking of windows in Hall's office. Nothing could be done to save the block or the contents of the shops, all attention being directed to saving the Luminary newspaper building and Star Hotel, situated on the opposite side of the read. The insurances are :—McGready, £300 in the State Office, £50 in the New Zealand Office; Wallace and Co., £875 in the British Dominion Office. Mr. Hall was uninsured, but as his portion was used only as an office his loss is only office stationery. Mr. McCrcady estimates his loss at £300. The buildings were insured in the Standard Office for £250, and the estimated less is £750.
