CAPTAIN SMART'S DEATH.
REFUSED TO TURN BACK.
(Received August 15. 3.30 p.m.) London, August 14. Lieutenant Barter describes how Captain Smart, who in his eagerness to get to the front enlisted in the ranks under the name of Hardy, met his death. "He was almost ten yards from the German trench," states the lieutenant, "when he was wounded in the right shoulder. I shouted: 'Hardy, go back.' He answered: 'All right, I'm lefthanded.' Then he rushed off and commenced to slam bombs at the enemy. He went on like that for twenty or thirty yards, when he was shot through the head, which was half blown off."
