AUSTRIAN* ATTEMPT TO REGAIN LOST GROUND.
ENTRENCHMENTS SHATTERED ALONG THE ISONZO. <K<?ceirccl August IS, s .10 p.m.) Rome. August 14. An Italian official communique states: "The struggle behind the Cadore frontier grows more intense. The enemy in the Monte Piana zone, supported by many guns, attempted on Friday to counter-attack against the positions from which they were, expelled on Thursday. After a furious combat he was driven back, with heavy losses. " W,hile our artillery in the Sexten Valley was maintaining a continuous fire, against, the enemy's works, our infantry climbed and entrenched themselves on the. summit of Oberbacherkanzel, south-east of Berbakherspitze. Another detachment in the meantime occupied an important group of Alpine communications, westward of Fort Ellacentgia- " Our batteries on the Isonzo front started a destructive fire against the Austrian defences in the Plezzo Valley. Direct hits were obtained against an Austrian battery skilfully hidden in caves. Some Austrian entrenchments fronting us at Monte Seibusi were shattered. Many of the occupants took to flight, and were killed by shrapnel and rifle fire.
