Speaking on the Whangarei Hospital B>ard's proposal to provide a maternity , ; home, Mr- Tattley, at the Whangarei -^ County Council meeting yesterday, declared that such an institution -was essen- -" tial to meet the needs of the back blocks, being even more necessary than for a city like Auckland. He declared that it was -8 just as essential to haveJ maternity hos- |§ pitals as hospitals for accident cases. V-'^ The county chairman, Mr. J. B. Mclrtnes, ~ P said the absence of a maternity hospital caused a check in the birthrate in the back blocks, owing to the risks and expense.
