QUIET WEEK REPORTED.

PRODUCE REMAINS HIGH.

Wholesale business for the week lias been quiet, -with few features of interest beyond the distribution of several imported lines that were in short supply until the arrival of shipments from London and Liverpool. From transactions recorded during the past few months it would appear that Auckland bouses carry larger stocks than are held in the South, so that besides being able to sell parcels for shipment to Southern firms they have so far withstood to a great extent the shortage that would naturally have been expected from reduced imports. Retail trade is quiet in all departments except in drapery and similar goods, where the ordinary demand is stimulated by the winter sales.

Produce: The markets are still high in most lines, and no relief can bo expected until the new season's crops are in sight, as Australia, is a buyer of anything we can spare. On the ether hand the high price is working its own cure in two ways, by curtailing the consumption and by "attracting supplies from outside sources"

Potatoes Firm. Potatoes Market has firmed considerably during the last two days, owing to a renewed inquiry from Australia, as it was reported last "week that the price had advanced to £11 in Sydney. It must be noted that export is not actually prohibited, but arrangements have been made for stopping it at any time. Southern holders are not offering freely for forward delivery, and local price remains at £8 ex store. Seed Potatoes : Inquiry is keen and excellent business is being done for planting in this province. Australian buyers are in the market for all varieties of redskins, which have advanced in price accordingly, and they now seem inclined to take limited quantities of white skins also. Onions : Market remains weak here, as buyers will not take any quantity when they know the risk of loss through growth. In Australia the price has jumped to £11, and the market still shows a firming tendency, as buyers are looking ahead in anticipation of a difficulty in importing towards the end of the season. New Zealand cannot very well take advantage of the conditions on the other side, as our stocks are rather small, and the quality is against shipping.

Oats, Wheat, and Maize. Oats: The tone of the market is weaker, although not many are offering. Invercargill reports indicate that not many are held in stock there, and stocks will not materially increase until the spring threshing. However, the price is so high that it requires a constant influence to keep the market at its present level. Wheat: Business is dull in milling wheat, while practically no fowl wheat is selling. Maize: This grain is still taking the place of wheat, and the quantities arriving from the coast are sufficient to supply the demand, assisted by Java maize, via Sydney. It is understood that further lots are on the way, while a small line is also offered for direct shipment from Capetown to Wellington. Barley Fair quantities are arriving from the East Coast, and these sell well for feed on account of the high price of wheat. Chaff: A good inquiry continues, both local and from Australia, but very little is offering. Hay: Very scarce, while straw is selling at double the usual price. Peas: Price is unchanged, but supplies are very small. Fertilisers: A large cargo of superphosphates will arrive from Melbourne in a few weeks. It is understood that the position will shortly be further improved by the manufacture of this important fertiliser locally. Price has advanced about 7s 6d per ton.
