[BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] V." Ellington', Wednedny. The Minister for Defence was asked today by Mr. J. A. Young (Waikato) whether the organisation in connection with the reporting to the Government on the condition oi New Zealand wounded soldiers at the Egyptian and Mediterranean hospitals is sufficiently perfected to enable the Defence authorities to readily answer inquiries respecting the recent condition of the wounded, especially those reported as dangerously ill or severely wounded. If so, would he cause inquiries from next of kin to be answered without delay? Mr. Young pointed out that a member of the 16th, Waikato. Regiment was reported ;is wounded on May i 6 and as dangerously ill on May 30, and later advices stated that the same soldier was at Victoria College Hospital, Alexandria Since May 30 no information could be obtained bv his relatives as to his condition. Mr. Allen made tha following reply : — "The Department gives all the informa- '■ tion as regards casualties at the theatre of war to the newspapers exactly as it receives them, and with the least possible delay. The arrangements made by the Post and Telegiaph Department, allowing nest of kin to send replies at the Government expense inquiring as to the condition of wounded soldiers, would appear to be applicable to this case. It is manifest that if the Department accedes to one request to make special inquiries by cable it is bound in fairness to do so in all cases where desired by next of kin. The advantage of the concession provided by the Post and Telegraph Department would to a great extent thus be nullified."
