' A proposal that a public welcome should be extended to the sick and wounded soldiers who are returning to New Zealand by the steamer Willochra was made in the House this afternoon. i Mr. WilfoTd (Hutt) asked the Minister for Defence whether any arrangements had been made for giving a public welcome to the returning soldiers. He hoped the Go vernment had not lost sight of this, tnat the welcome would be a generous one, and I that the day would be observed as a public j holiday, in order that residents might be | able to show their appreciation of what j the wounded soldiers had done. Nothing ' that the people could do would bo too I much. I The Hon. J. Allen said that he thought every arrangement had been made to give . the men a fit and proper welcome, but there was the question of what was a fit and proper welcome to men, some of whom • would have to go into hospital. | Mr. Wilford : Of course, I don't know j what the condition of the men. is. | Mr. Allen : It has all been published in ' the papers. He said that a certain num- : ber of the menßo in would be sent to hospitals in Auckland, Hamilton, Palmers ton, Wellington, Christchurch, and ( Dunedin. Others would go to their homes, and some to convalescent homes. He could not say exactly how many would go to | convalescent homes until another telegram j was received from the ship. He would be i very glad to arrange for a public reception to these men. but a reception for sick j men was rather a difficult matter. POPULAR DOCTOR.

OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WiNCAsri, Wednesday. A scheme of considerable importance to members of Foresters' lodges in the North Island has been promoted by the Marton branch to provide for lodge members who may return from the war in a disabled condition. The proposal is to levy on each member a sum of not less than 3d per quarter, payable yearly in advance, and as there are approximately 20,000 members, it is estimated to produce £1000. The scheme is now under consideration by the various lodges concerned. Although threepence is fixed as the minimum, it is thought that many lodges will make a six penny levy, and others more, so that something like £3000 might be obtained from that source.
