AUSTRALIA'S EFFORTS.

MR. FISHER'S CLAIM. FIRST AMONG DOMINIONS. NEW ZEALAND COMPARISON. (Received July 7. 10.55 p.m.) Melbourne, July 7. In support of his contention that Australia has done more to assist the Enfpire than any other Dominion, Mr Fisher has issued a statement comparing the efforts of the Commonwealth with those of New Zealand and Canada. He maintains that in order to reach Canada's contribution in proportion to population Australia would have had to furnish only 72,000 men, whereas the Commonwealth had raised 91,000 men. To equal New Zealand's contribution Australia would have to raise 84.000 men. Approximately that number has already been sent to the front. Resides the assistance rendered by the Commonwealth Navy, which the Canadians realise protected their Esquimault dockyards from Admiral Von Spre's depredations, the Commonwealth has also presented the War Office with a motor transport column, costing £200.000. and has given effective aid in connection with hospital ships and ambulances. In Egypt alone the Commonwealth has provided 7450 beds, and has created an efficient transport service costing £11.000 daily. BRISK RECRUITING. CAMPAIGN IN THE COUNTRY. (Received July 7. 8.40 p.m.) Sydney. July 7. Recruiting is brisk and promises to surpass previous records. Victoria is accepting 1000 recruits daily. Mr. W. A. Holman is instituting a scheme whereby the police will obtain lists of eligible men in the country districts. MINISTRY OF MUNITIONS. DISCUSSION BY CABINET. Melbourne, July 7.
