FRENCH SUCCESSES.
HOW A STRONGHOLD WAS WON
RUSSIA'S FIGHT IN GALICIA
SOUND- OF GUNS ■IN LEMBERG.
ALLIED PROGRESS ON GALLIPOLI
Details of the capture of Buval Bottom, near Lorette, north of Arras, by the French, show that the Germans here occupied a ravine which formed a natural stronghold and abounded in subterranean forts and redoubts. The French invested the position on three sides, and, after a -bombardment, their infantry, advanced on two sides. The Germans are said to have fought with the ferocity of cornered rats, taking cover behind piles of their own dead. , It is officially reported that the French, by a fresh attack, progressed three-fifths of a mile towards Souchez. They repulsed a violent attack in the Argonne, and captured two lines of trenches in the heights of the Meuse. They continue to progress along the Fecht, in Alsace. Heavy rains are falling in Galicia, which are aiding the Russian defence by extending the marshes. '"V Small streams are thus becoming formidable obstacles. Passes have been issued to 10,000 Russians permitting them to leave Lemberg, where the sound of guns is audible. Strong forces of the enemy crossed the Dniester, in Eastern Galicia, below Nizniow, but were driven back by the Russians, who captured 2000 prisoners. - Advance guards of the enemv which attempted to force the passage of the Grodek Lakes, west of Lemberg, were -driven back. \ ..*>,.. . 9 - , .' ' The Germans claim to have captured the Russian positions at Grodek, and to have advanced north of Lemberg. ' ft
