"COUNTRY WORK."

RULING BY ARBITRATION COURT.

A point arising out of the Auckland District Carpenters and Joiners' Award came up for interpretation at yesterday's sitting of the Arbitration Court. It was set out that the Dominion Portland Cement Co., Ltd., was carrying out an extensive building scheme at Tikorangi and at Wairua Falls. Carpenters were employed, and the question for the Court was whether the work constituted country work within the meaning of clause 7 of the award, entitling the men, or any of them, to the additional sum of 2s pi;r day. Mr. J. R. Reed, K.C., with him Mr. Anderson, appeared for the company, and Mr. A. E. Skelton for the union. After hearing argument, the Court stated that it thought that' the answer must be that the work was not country work within the meaning of the award. The award was based on the recommendation of the Conciliation Council, and was framed by regular builders and workers, who were providing for the ordinary exigencies of the trade. The work could not be differentiated, His Honor thought, from a citizen erecting a cottage or a palace in the country. The confpany could not be said to be engaged in the industry.
