SPANISH 44 "FRIGHTFULNESS."
The Countess de Morella, who has died in her ninety-fifth year, was the widow of a soldier who, although a Spaniard, practised " frightfulness" 011 quite the approved German model.' Field-Marshal Ramon Cabrera, Count de Morella, became notorious during the Carlist insurrection for his mercilessness, which led to his being nicknamed the " Tiger of the Maeztrazgo." On one occasion he shot over 1100 prisoners of war, including many civilians and the wires of four of Queen Isabella's partisans, and the only redeeming feature of this atrocity waj that lie was at the time burning to avenge the death of his mother.
