DINNER WITH THE KAISER.

MR. ROOSEVELT'S RETORT.

Ax amusing story pi Herr Dernburg's campaign, which shows that there are at least somo Americans who refuse to regard a dinner with tho Kaiser as entailing a moral obligation to support him, is going the round of the newspapers in Now York, says a correspondent of 'the Daily Mail. It appears that Herr Dernburg, the Kaiser's emissary there, with characteristic lack of approached Mr. Roosevelt and asked him the reason of his hostility to Germany. " Because I think the "position of Germany is wrong," was Mr. Roosevelt's reply. "But," objected Herr Dernburg, "you and tho Kaiser are friends."

"I have a great respect for the Kaiser and admiration for the German people. I object to' their war policy—that is all," observed Mr. Roosevelt.

"Nevertheless," insisted Herr Dernburg, " the German Government on your visit there honoured you above any other citizen of a foreign country. Why, the Emperor even invited you to dinner." "So did King George," retorted Mr. Roosevelt. And that, says M. Lucien Bonlieur, to whom Mr. Roosevelt related the story, ended the conversation.
