HELP FOE WOUNDED.

POST OFFICE CARNIVAL

SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION.

OVER £1000 OBTAINED.

The Auckland post, telegraph and telephone officers' carnival in aid of the Hospital Ship and Wounded Soldiers' Relief Fund was brought to a successful close last night. It was attended by enthusiastic crowds all the time that it was open, ?jjd the business done was very satisfactory. Many of the stall-holders reported "sold out" repeatedly, but all stalls were willingly replenished, and th« profitable sales continued. It is certain that the amount to be forwarded to the fund as a result of the carnival will con siderably exceed £1000. It is admitted on all sides that the carnival has been the largest and most pretentious function of the kind yet conducted by a Government Department in the Dominion. It has had the effect of conferring unexpected benefits upon the hundreds of workers in the various branches, who rarely see cich other in normal times, and the association of the last three weeks has created a new fellow, ship and revealed a unity of interest that will have notable ejects in the future.

It is impossible to single anyone out for special praise. The officers have sacrificed their leisure hours without demur; and the telephone exchange girls not only did the preparatory work, but the soiling as well. With their day's duty at the exchange and their work for the carnival, many of them have been Icing 16 hours a day. All the officers worked willingly, and desire no thanks or reward. Last night's proceedings commenced with the usual procession down Queen Street, headed by the Garrison Band. The Post, Telegraph and Telephone Glee Club, and Orchestra contributed a number of acceptable items, and the auction of the innumerable gifts commenced before nine o'clock. Seven auctioneers volunteered their services, and an executive " draw" resulted in favour of Messrs. Louis Lewis and J. Jones. The former disposed of the fancy goods and the latter of the produce. Three valuable dogs were included in the offerings. Miss Raisher's pet sheep lent to ths committee collected over £30. The carnival was brought to a close amid scenes of great enthusiasm.
