WAR FUND SUGGESTED.

PROPORTIONAL TAXATION SYSTEM.

An entertainment was given at Mangapeehi last week, in aid of the Hospital Ship and Wounded Soldiers' Relief Fund. At the close -the following resolution was carried :— That whke thiß ' meeting of supporters of the Hospital Ship Fund is glad to help in this humane work, its members are of opinion that benevolent efforts on the part of tho public only succeed in touching tho fringe of the necessities of the times, and that these demand a special and heavy increase of the public exchequer to meet the whole cost of our share in the war. The utmost that this country can do for its expeditionary force will not be too much, and, therefore, the authorities are urged to take immediate action to establish a war fund, that will meet tho whole cost of equipment and maintenance of our forces, and will permit of equitable payment to the men who volunteer; a generous annuity to those who' return disabled and to' the dependents of those who fall; and, that this fund can best be raised by a system of proportional taxation under which each will pay according to his ability."
