HOW THE FRENCH CAPTURED ARLAIN ST. NAZAIRE.
VILLAGE CONVERTED INTO FORTRESS BY ENEMY.
FRENCH BLOW UP HOUSES ONE BY ONE.
(Received ifay 31. 10.15 p.m.)
London, May 31.
With the capture of Ablain St. Nazaire, eight miles north-east of Arras, the Germans lose what was considered to be their most stronglydefended position after Notre Dame de Lorette. Ablain had '2000 defenders with 100 machine guns, of which many were destroyed by the high explosive shells used by the a.Uies.
The Germans had connected the houses of the village by underground ways, in which they sheltered during the French bombardments, emerging with Maxims to''meet the French bayonet charges. The French, therefore, had to blow up the houses one by one and not leave a wall standing to prevent an ambuscade.
The Germans have converted numerous factories and colliery works west of Lens into veritable blockhouses.
