FIGHTING ALONG THE POLISH RIVERS.

GERMANS LOSE HEAVILY IN DNIESTER REGION.

• The High Commissioner reports under date of London, May 28: " Petrograd reports that in the region of Shavli, in the Baltic littoral, the Russians were successful on Tuesday and Wednesday. Progress was made south-west of the Muravieno-Shavli liae and Lower Dubissa. The .Russians repulsed tHe enemy's offensive -at Rosaieny, capturing several hundred prisoners, automobiles, and -uther 1 trophies. - Bubie, on the enemy's right wing, was bombarded on Tuesday ' with' heavy artillery. >" " ''' i -" r . '• In the region of Osowiec, in the north of Poland, the enemy ■ attempted a fruitless offensive under cover of asphyxiating gas east of Jedwabno. In several sectors of the Narew front there was considerable activity with the artillery and rifle firing. " In the region of the Vistula and the Bzura, in Central Poland, the' Russians' light infantry bayoneted 60 of the enemy in a successful skirmish with , pickets, the survivors being made prisoners! In the direction of Opatow, in South Poland, the enemy made barren attacks with great forces. 1 " "In Galicia on Tuesday and Tuesday night the enemy attacked the whole front along the Upper Vistula and left of the San, but was everywhere , repulsed with great loss- An intense, . stubborn battle is in progress on both bankß of the San between Przemysl and the .River Lubaczowka,' and between Przemysl and the great marshes of. the Dniester, and continues in the region beyond the Dniester. "On Tuesday the enemy opened a determined offensive along the whole front of the great; marshes from the Dniester to Dolina. On this and the following days the enemy suffered enormous losses, but was nowhere successful. The 1 hostile element which pierced between the Russian points d'appui near Stry were destroyed by artillery fire. During thb counter-attack the Russians took many prisoners, the number not being known."
