He is the present holder of the open championship of New Zealand. The force with which a golf ball is driven was illustrated by the accident which befel formor Attorney-General Francis X. Carmody at the Oakland Golf Club, Bayside. N.Y. A viciously-pulled drive by his opponent caught him on the thumb, the bone of which was broken in four places. When the surgeon examined the injury and informed the patient of the number of breaks, Carmody turned to his opponent and exclaimed: "What do you think of that? Broken in four places, do you hear? Four," "Well, wasn't that what I called before I drove?" asked the other. "Say, would you mind," asked Carmody in a tone of deep feeling,, "to shout 'One' after this before you drive?" >■
