HOSPITAL SHIP APPEAL.* ;■ REMARKABLE =; RESPONSE. ¥ OFFERS OF MATERIAL. ; : : ■ - ACTIVITIES OF LADIES. • . ; The appeal on behalf of New Zealand's ■wounded soldiers has had an extraordinary response, throughout the Auckland | Province, and money and material are be- , ing donated in a manner worthy of the district. Not only is the appeal being made for funds, to equip the first New - Zealand hospital ship, but the Auckland executive has extended the scope of the movement, and urges the public to continue subscribing so that a substantial fund may be, raised to deal with all demands for the wounded that may be made in the future. "Tho public," said the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Guiison, yesterday, "are responding very generously to tho appeal for the equipment of the hospital ship, and no doubt the General Committee's decision to widen the scope of the appeal so as to establish a fund for the benefit of the .wounded generally, and to meet the de- ■*' mands of -'a kindred or simitar character •;._ to that of tho hospital ship, will result in ".,. the'public responding m a very much wider scale. Messrs. Wilson and Horto:i C have handed to mo a chequo for £4500, *■ being £4000 subscribed to the Herald fund by the public of Auckland, and £500 from the Herald proprietors. This sum is being paid into tho general fund of the executive, along with v the amounts re-' ceived under what is known as the Mayor's 5 fund. The total amount therefore in the hands of the executive is £9836.' The two funds are to 'be kept open, and continued on the wider bass. I request the public to re;.*£v spond liberally to either fund— does not RV" matter whick-i-for the- very worthy and .?> humanitarian object.
