THE NEED FOR RECRUITS.
An excellent example to other organisations is being set by two athletic bodies in Auckland—the Rugby Union and the Hockey Association. Both are endeavouring to sco that all players under their control shall do their share towards securing a successful issue to the war. The Rugby Union is asking for a record of all footballers who are members of senior cadet corps, territorials, or the National Reserve. When this information is obtained the various clubs will be called together in order to consider in what way they can further help the Empire. One of the union's objects in taking this step is to ensure that all those unable to go to the front shall fit themselves for the defence of the Dominion ; another will doubtless be to see that those who are able to volunteer for the Expeditionary Forces, but have not yet done so, shall offer their services without delay. The Hockey Association has similar objects in view, and' is taking the matter up with the enthusiasm it deserves. Many young men in all walks of life are still evading their responsibilities while the troops at the Dardanelles are cheerfully fighting and falling for them. The action of these athletic bodies might well be followed by others which are in a position to stimulate recruiting so that the Government may have.a large number of athletic young men available as required.
