PRODUCTION OF MEAT.
1 1 STOCK SALES DISCUSSED. I — ' e WHAT THE FARMERS PREFER. i —— t ) i Several questions relating to the meats producing industry arose at the animal 1 conference (if the 'Auckland Provincial , Farmers' Union yesterday. , j A motion affirming the desirability of , j selling fat stock by weight was supported ion the ground that this method of sale and purchase would be fair to both parties, 'ihe union, it was urged, should endeavour to force the hands of the auctioneers in 1 the matter. In America, where they had ' much larger markets than New Zealand had, stock was sold by we-'ght. The motion was carried, * 3 Mr. W. Sturges, Rukuhia, moved: l " That the union endeavour to get the 1 Government to take over the meat Indus-' try, and- arrange that the meat be sold , on the hooks at the various freezing 1 works." He urged that by this method i they would get the most for their produce, 1 and it would also be an advantage to the 3 small butcher. Captain Colbeck said he sympathised . with the proposal, although ho was not , sanguine that it would have any practical » effect. It had 'been advocated by thej Fanners and Graziers' Association sis > years ago. 3 The motion was opposed by a delegate, . on the ground that it would only be intro--3 dncing another middleman. He was in 3 favour-of the farmers controlling the prices themselves, and selling on the hooks. The motion was negatived. The fluctuations in the pork market was the subject of some discussion. it was pointed out that while it cost the farmer, more to produce pork now than formerly, the prices had not improved in the same proportion, Major Lnsk said that a solution of the problem might lie in the direc- , tion of an export trade.
