RISKED LIFE FOR CHILD.
YORKSHIRE SAPPER'S ACT.
New? of, a brave deed performed by one of Hiiddcrsficld's soldier suns now at the front has just reached his wife in a letter from an officer in the Royal Engineers. T|ie letter reads as follows :—
"Dear Mrs. Saddington.-I would just like to tell you of a good deed done by your husband a few days ago. Whilst we were at work a small Belgian child fell into the river. Without any hesitation your husband plunged in and saved it from drowning. ,
" I am glad to have men like that under my command. The cut in his foot is nothing to worry about, they did not even detain him in hospital, but simply dressed it and sent him back to us straight away.—(Signed.') E. L. Smanir, Captain. R.E."
( It has transpired that the injury to Saddington's foot, sustained when diving into the river to rescue the child, was more serious than was at first anticipated, and on his being sent -back to the base hospital it was found that the big toe joint of the injured foot had been severed. Saddingtoit is now making satisfactory progress. He was a reservist, and saw active service during the last Beor war, being recalled to the colours in August last.
