THE SHOOTING SEASON.

GAME PLENTIFUL. EXCELLENT PROSPECTS. Prospects for the shooting season in the Auckland district, which opens on Saturday next, are described as excellent. The president of the Acclimatisation Society, Lieut.-Colonel W. H. Hazard, states that there has- been a good breeding season owing to the dry weather. He anticipates that there will be a fair number of birds. Pheasants seem tc be coming on very well, and should there be a little rain to fill up the swamps before Saturday it should improve the prospects for ducks, of which there are plenty about. Californian quail are very plentiful, and black swan are as numerous as ever. The Government's departure in placing licenses on sale earlier than usual has had a good effect, and quite a number of licenses have already been taken out. The fact that it is a close season for pigeons has caused much disappointment, the birds being very plentiful in some districts. Fact 6 worthy of note by sportsmen are that not more than 12 cock pheasants may be shot by any one person in any one day, and not more than 25 head of native game. The sale of both native and imported game is everywhere prohibited.

The following is a list of the kinds of game which may be shot in the acclimatisation districts named :Auckland: Cock pheasants, Californian and Australian quail, grey duck, spoonbill duck, teal, pukeko and black swan.
