FREEZING INDUSTRY.

WHANGAREI HEADS FIRE. ASSESSORS' INSPECTION. OPERATIONS RESUME SHORTLY. No official estimate has yet been made el the damage caused by the fire at die Whangarei Heads Freezing Works on Saturday. Last night Mr. A. Bevins, local representative of Messrs. Vestry Brother*, the owners of the works, together with the insurance companies' assessors, left for Whangarei to make an inspection of the works. The insurances are held in London, with the exception of a Dom:n,on company's policy on general stores, ha;'*, | etc.

" We expect in a very short time," said Mr. Bevins last night, "to have the works aeain in full operation. New insulation will be required, the roof of the freeing block will have to be built, and sevfr.il side- walls repaired or renewed." When the fire occurred there was 400,0001b ;>f meat in the works. All the carcases had now been taken out of the freezing cuaraber. and put in a storeroom. Temporary employment had been found for the men at various minor works, but it was expected that killing would recommence within a fortnight.

NEW WORKS AT WESTFIELD. "WORKING BY LATE SPRING." Tenders for the construction of the buildings in connection with the esttield Freezing Company's new works at Weftfield are to be called in a few days' time. The works will comprise a compact block of buildings erected in reinforced concrete, with steel internal structure and a minimum of woodwork. The greater portion of the block will comprise threeI storeys. Tho capacity of the works is to Ibe 3000 carcases per day. At present men i are engaged in carrying out excavation work and constructing a railway siding. Mr. A. Bevins, local representative (if Vestey Brothers, who formed the private company to carry on the works, stated yesterday that it was anticipated that tho works would be in full operation for the late spring.
