A CIVIC WELCOME. q ATHLETIC SPORTS TO-DAY. • 4 I civic welcome was extended on Saturlay to the visiting teams who are comleting at the fourteenth annual tournament of the New Zealand University. -• The function took place at the Remuera jawn Tennis Club's court. In the ab- ; ence of the Mayor, Mr. C. J. Parr, the : )eputy-Mayor, Mr. John Court, wel* :omed the Southern students. Mr. G. L. 'eacockc, vice-chairman of the Auckland Jniversity College Council, and Mr. F. V. Airey, president of the Students' Association, also welcomed the visiting teams. Mr. Airey remarked that such gatherings vere the only means the four colleges had >[ coming together and acting as one .iniversitv. On Saturday evening the debating tournament was held, Victoria College jeing placed first and Auckland second, ivith Canterbury and Otago occupying respectively the ' third and fourth places. I'he challenge scroll will bo presented to he winners at the university dance, to be leld in the Masonic Hall to-morrow evenn Yesterday afternoon nearly 100 students attended a service at St. John s . •hapel, and were the guests of the warden, the Rev P. T. Williams, and students at ifternoon tea, The sermon was preached bv the Anglican Bishop of Auckland, Dr. A W. Averill. The speaker remarked now pleased he was that the spiritual sale jf life had been recognised by the Stulents, when arranging their programme, l here was a danger among students he ■lid of an undeveloped manhood, they nust realise that the spirit must bo do- ~ i-eloped as well as mind and body to atain a perfect manhood.
