WAIHI EXTENDED.

OPERATIONS TO BE RESUMED. Operations are shortly to be resumed at the VVaihi Extended mine, which has been under protection for some time. The company is arranging for a report to be cubmitted by a mining expert as to f.he best method of developing the mine. The report submitted by the mine manager just before protection was obtained stated that the main shaft had been completed to 1100 ft, and No. 6 level opened up. Two drives were put out— northwest drive to 70ft, when the north-west reef was cut, and driven on 20ft. It dild not provo payable for that distance. The south-east drive was advanced to 350 ft. At 245 ft 3ft of stone was cut. This was, no doubt, the south-east lode which, in No. 5 level, was displaced by a downthrow. The lode was settled and encased in a eood class of country at No. 6, and as a strong body of quartz was shown going east at No. 5, improved results might bo anticipated at No. 6 in driving on this stone, preparations for which were practically complete. A further 160 ft of driving would bring the south crosscut to the No. 1 lode. Overhead on the No. 5 level promising values, with sulphide ore, were met with, and with the greater depth and improved country there was every promise of payable results at No. 6 level. The crosscut had been passing through country considerably better than any previously met with in the mine. NEW WAITAIA. The stopo going south over No. 6 level, New Waitaia mine, Kuaotunu, was showing a fair reef 18in wide last week. In the stope being taken along above the intermediate level the reef looked well, showing over 15in of good payable ore. MOUNT LYELL RETURNS. Bv Tclosraph— Association— Melbourne, April 2. The Mount Lyell returns for the month ended March 17 show that 26,178 tons of ore were treated, producing 725 tons of blister copper, containing 717 tons of copper, 40,2850z of silver, and 806oz of gold.
