Ai.riiorou a certain amount of light has recently been thrown on the subject, we are. still without definite information as to tlft largest (alibie guns which have been employed by the Germans m the war. Major-General Sir Desmond O'Callaghan now raises the question whether they have ever used the 42-centimetre howitzer. This weapon was originally credited with having been utilised at the sieges of Namur and Maubenge, and possibly that of Liege, hut experts have lately shown an inclination to doubt whether this was.the case, owing to the 42-centimetre having to be fired from a solid concrete platform, provided with holding-down bolts, which must .bo in position btjore ' the . platform itself is finished.
