GERMAN SPIES.
♦ Mr. William Le QrEix has written much un tlie spy system. He now brings tint whole subject into a stout papercovered volume, " German Spies in ringland." Needless to say, it is extremely interesting. The author appeals to his readers to assist in forming a vigorous public opinion " that shall insist that, at whatever cost, this canker in our public life shall be looted out." We must, he adds, " make it impossible that our hospitality shall be abused by those who are plotting our downfall." He mentions ,i curious experience lie had in Norfolk, a county which has long received the most careful attention of Herman secret agents :— "In a field, high up on the l.iff be tween Cromer and Rnnton, I last year established a high-power wireless installation. When in working order, with a receiving ratine of 1500 miles or more, according to atmospheric conditions—l allowed visitors to inspect it. There came along certain inquisitive persons with a slight accent in their speech, and of these T believe no fewer than eight are now interned. It formed quite an interesting trap for spies!" Mr. Le Queux also states that he was the first to report to the authorities a secret store of Herman arms and ammunition in London, afterwards removed, and (subsequently seized after the outbreak of war. '" Other stores have, it is said, been found in various parts of the country, the secret? of which, of course, have never been allowed to leak out to Ul9 public for fear of creating alarm."
