PICNIC ABANDONED.
THE TRAMWAY EMPLOYEES.
Tiifi annual picnic nf the Auckland Tramway Company's employees was to have been held at Motukorea yesterday, but owing to the wet weather conditions the idea of picnicking had to be abandoned. Two boats carried over 1500 of the employees and their friends to the island. When the first boat—the Kestrel, carrying about 1000 people -reached Motukorea at 10 a.m. the weather was fine, although threatening. Most of those on board disembarked, and were soon scattered in various parts of the island. About an hour later the other boat—the Condorarrived from Ponsonby. By the time it reached the picnic resort the rain was coming down in torrents, and men, women, and children wet through were seen running to the wharf to seek shelter on board the Kestrel, which was moored to the wharf. Very quickly the vessel had a crowd on hoard and returned to Auckland. The Condor also returned without landing any of her passengers at the island. Later a steamer was sent to Motukorea for several people who failed to catch the Kestrel on the return journey. When the pass *;er» landed at The Ferries they were Liken to their various homes in the suburbs by tramcars. which were specially put on for the occasion.
