FIFTY YEARS AGO.

yvrv-'vv*ji. .... i . . . » ' *• V MOST GALLANT ACTION. THE RESCUE OF MR. GRACE. (From the (HERALD of April 1, 1865) The resolutions passed at the crowded meeting of yesterday were a graceful tribute of praise accorded by the people of Auckland to Captain Levy and tiiose who assisted him in effecting the rescue of the Rev. Grace frc-m the pener of the l'ai Marui fanatics at OpotikL At the close of the meeting measures were initiated for raising a sum of money to reimburse Captain Levy and his brother for the large amount of property which they have sacrificed in saving Mr. Grace, and in tile attempt to save the lamented Mr. Volkner. That the loss has been a most serious t one to Captain Levy, none can doubt.-' Had he preferred to havo acted selfishly, and with a view to the furtherance of his own interests alone, he might have been now, not a penny the worse, carrying on his trade at Opotiki unmolested. He took, however, the course .if diitv, and we have no doubt that the public will now take theirs. As we have before said, if any man deserved the Victoria Cross it is Captain Levy. The ofiicers of H.M.S. Eclipse, who were the best judges, and had opportunities which others had not of knowing the value of Captain Levy's services, have declared that in the rescue of Mr. Grace he performed a most gallant action.
