NEWMARKET MAYORALTY.
MR. TEED'S RETIREMENT.
The Mayor of Newmarket, Mr. D. Teed, recently announced that he would not seek re-election to the Mayoralty. The members of the Borough Council, therefore. asked him to reconsider his decision, it being urged that as the question of amalgamation with the city awaited deci-t-ion. he should continue to hold office. At last night's meeting of the council, Mr. Teed announced that he had gone very carefully into the representations made by the members of the council. He was of opinion that the details in regard to the Greater Auckland question would be settled before his term of officc expired. In view of this, and, taking into consideration the fact that he had held office for four years, he felt that another Mayor should be elected. Business and private reasons were also responsible for his retirement. Mr. J. A. Jaffrey expressed regret that Mr. Teed would not allow himself to be nominated for a further term, and announced that he himself would be a candidate for the Newmarket Mayoralty.
