ENEMY'S WORKS DEMOLISHED

CALM IN THE ARGONNE.

Wellington, February 2. The High Commissioner reports, under date London, February 1 :

" Paris reports that yesterday an artillery duel, particularly lively, was fought, extending over the whole northern region. South-east of Ypres a German infantry attack on trenches north of the canal was stepped by combined artillery and infantry fire.

On the whole of the Aisne front our batteries demolished the enemy's trenches, earthworks under construction, anil machine-gun shelters.

'■ We have strengthened our position in the Champagne region, northwest of Mesnelle-Sharles, and have also strengthened our organisation in a small wood, captured un Saturday.

The situation in the Argonne is calm, where the enemy appear to have suffered severely in the recent fight.''
