FRENCH ADVANCE INTO GERMAN TERRITORY.
ENEMY YIELDING GROUND IN ALSACE. FORCED TO EVACUATE VILLAGE OF CERNAY. (Received February 3. 1.30 a.m.) Paris, February 2. The French are making gradual progress in Alsace. The Germans quietly evacuated Cernay, east of Steinbach, which the French guns made untenable. They are now bombarding Cernay to prevent the French from occupying the village. Meanwhile the French are shelling the forest of Nonnenbruch, where the Germans are entrenched, barring the advance on Mulhausen. Cernay lies four miles east of Thann, which is already in the occupation of the French, and nine miles west of Mulhausen. which is an important German post in the south of Alsace.
