THE LA BASSEE FIGHT

GERMANS LEAVE MANY DEAD. RUSSIA'S CHANGED TACTICS. INVASION OF EAST PRUSSIA. A STRATEGICAL MOVEMENT. The Germans are still on the aggressive in the region of Bethane and La Bassee. On Monday they violently attacked the allied trenches north of the Bethune and La Bassee road, but were repulsed, and left many dead. A surprise attack further south, near Albert, also failed. The French are making gradual progress in Alsace. Cernay, which has been the scene of some fierce fighting, has been evacuated by the Germans. A report from Petrograd says the Russians are operating on a plan to outflank the German position in the Masurian Lakes region, and over-run East Prussia. The Russians have so far had little success in this district. The strategical purpose of the new movement is said to be to divert tile Germans from the western battlefield and from Poland and Galicia. Six German airmen have droppped 60 bombs on Dunkirk. The damage done was insignificant.
