FAMOUS GENERAL'S DEATH.

London", February 2. The death is announced of Major-General Sir Luke O'Connor, V.C.
Sir Luke O'Connor, who was in his 83rd year, rose from the ranks to majorgeneral. He served in the Crimea, 1854-55, and in the Indian Mutiny, including the relief of Lucknow. He was one ol the centre sergeants at Alma, and advanced between the officers carrying the colours. When near the redoubt Lieutenant Anstrulher, who was carrying a colour, was mortally wounded and fell. O'Connor though shot in the breast, snatched up the colour and carried it to the end of the action though urged to relinquish it aj%i go to the rear on account of his wound. For this he received the Victoria Cross and also received his commission.
