CHARGES AGAINST WIDOW.

W.unr, Tuesday. At a sitting '■"< the Magistrate's Court! today. Mr. F. .T. Burgess. S.M., presid-j ing, a boardinghouse-keeper named i Eleanor Esther Mitchell was convicted j of breaches of the Licensing Act by , using the names of other persons for obtaining liquor in a no-license area and keeping liquor for sale. Having previ- j ouslv offended against the licensing laws, defendant was liable to a term of im-! prisonment, but counsel, Mr. Clendon, urged that she should not be sent to gaol, as she was a widow in comparatively poor circumstances and had two young children dependent upon her. His. Worship accordingly fined defendant 40s and costs on each of four charges of using the names of other persons when procuring liquor and ordered her to come up for sentence when called upon on the other charge. Mrs. Mitchell undertook to leave the district not later than the end of the present month. Mr. Burgess made it clear that in the event of any other persons coming before him tho full penalty would be. inflicted.
