NOTES ON THE RACING. [BY TELEGB.ATH OWN' CORRESPONDENT. 1 Wellington-, Wednesday. Of the Wellington Cup candidates nothing stripped better than Byron, but little fault could be found with the condition of Indigo and Pavlova. In the preliminary Pavlova moved the best. At the barrier the favourite Indigo, drew outside place, while Marsha! McDonald was on the The latter was badly left when the tapes went up, and after going half-a-mile he was pulled up. Ogier and Ladoga made the early running from Peg, Football, and Pavlova, with Kilrain tailed off. Going down the back stretch the leading positions remained much the same, but several of the rear division improved their positions. At the half-mile Peg had fallen back, and at the straight entrance Ogier and Ladoga began to find the pace too warm. Pavlova and Indigo were clear at the distance, with Fair Rosamond coming fast. Indigo seemed to be fretting the best of the mare, but over the last 50yds Pavlova came again, and after a stirring straggle won by a bare half-head. Fair Rosamond was on Indigo's quarters, and then came Ogier, Byron, Ladoga and Bertrada. Sinapis was pulled up. and walked away very sore. The time for the; race is a. New Zealand record. The

first two furlongs were run in 25 3-ss. sir furlongs in lm 15s, mile in lm 40 3-5s and the full distance in 2m 325. It will thus be seen that the last mile and a-quarter was run in the very fast time of 2m 6 2-5%. The scratching of Bimeter left four runners in {he Waterloo Stakes, and Emperador, Autumnus, and Sauci were backed in that order. At the start Emperador led Autumnus, but there was no pace on for the first quarter of a mile. It then improved, and Sauci was whipping the field ten lengths behind the leaders. At the half-mile he had moved up. and, entering the straight, he was not far away In the run home Emperador shook off Autumnus but over the last lew strides he succumbed to Sauci after a fine finish

A rank outsider prevailed in the Telegraph Handicap, for which there was a hela numbering 17 starters. Downham, .Beidame Bimeter. and Beiasco were very evenly backed, the first-named being the actual favourite. A good deal of delay took place at the start, and when the tapes were finally released a cloud A dust obscured °. P i i n 5 er , s fhe colour* of Dinner Gons and Uladiol* were first to become prominent. ana when the course proper was reached iSimeter and Hoy were racing alongside this pair Hoy gradually forged ahead on the inside, and ween the post was reached she was a neck in front of Bimeter, the latter being hard ridden to beat Master Achilles or second place. Downham and Beldame failed to finish amongst the first half-dozen. The time for the race was the fastest ever recorded in a six furlong race at Trectham. the m-nor events were well contested. m 'n W •,s ,he bl e< * ft horse in training in the DomiD.on. scored his fourth successive win when he ran home clear of the field in the Trenthnrr. Welter. He was followed by the favourite Blackall. who was anything but well ridden.
