CARDINAL MERCIER CASE.
PROTEST AGAINST TREATMENT. ASKED TO SIGN RETRACTION. London, January 19. A message from the Vatican states that tho text has been received of Cardinal Herder's letter of January 10 to the priests of his diocese, protesting against the- Germans' treatment of himAdvices from the Vatican state that the Germans on January 6 asked Cardinal Mercier to sign a retraction of the expressions in his pastoral. Cardinal Mercier refused.
