The tone of the market was more cheerful than in December. In Merinos, most of the combing sorts were generally 5 per cent. dearer, while nil scoureds sold at about the same prices,
The improved demand was due to United States and Continental support, following the Board of Trade's announcement that licenses would bo given for export to the United States and allies upon sworn declaration that the wool would not bo reshipped to an enemy country. All rrossbreds were fully 5 per cent, dearer.
The Bank of New Zealand has received the following advice by cable from its London office —" The wool sales opened with strong competition. All crossbred? are 7i per cent, dearer ; good Merinos par to 5 per cent, dearer; others unchanged.''
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company have received the following cable from London:—" W'>ol : Tone of market better. Greasy Merino; 5 per cent., greasy cre.«s- - 7 A per cent, higher. American operators buying."'
