POSITION AT LA BASSEE.
CONFLICTING STATEMENTS.
ABANDONED BY GERMANS.
BRITISH SUCCESS DENIED
London", January is
The Times explains that, the reported success of the British troops at La Bassec, where it was stated they charged up a hillside and after two hours' work with the bayonet drove the Germans out of their trenches, has not been confirmed. The Times says the mud is turning the trenches at this point into a quagmire. A heavy artillery duel is now in progress.
The Paris newspaper, the Matin, says a message from Saint Omer states that owing to the position becoming untenable under converging artillery fire, the Germans have abandoned La Bassee.
An eye-witness at general headquarters denies the reported capture of German positions at La Bassee. He says no attack was.attempted. Although the enemy's artillery has increased in strength, our artillery destroyed an important bridge at Frelinghien, below Armentieres.
