OSTEND IN DIRE STRAITS.
REDUCED TO HORSEFLESH.
GERMAN FORTIFICATIONS.
HEAVY GUNS ON THE DUNES
Amsterdam, January 17.
A Dutch correspondent at Ostend states that 6000 out of 45,000 inhabitants remain in the city. Horseflesh is the only meat available, and they have but little bread. The Germans plundered the stores and cleared them of beer and wine.
There arc 64 heavy guns on the dunes, and 13,000 Germans are guarding the boulevards at Mariakerke, on the coast south of Ostend, where there are powerful fortifications. The Germans are forcing the Belgians to dig trenches, and threaten the people with starvation in the event of refusal.
Twelve thousand German convicts, who have arrived at Ostend, are carrying the dead from the Yser line and taking the floating corpses from the canals. The corpses are being buried outside Ostend.
