Te Pcke, Monday. A fire has been raging during the past two days in the Pukekino and Waihi Swamps, and several thousand acres of land have been swept. Several gangs of men are fighting the fire this afternoon to prevent it spreading. The task seems hopeless, owing to the high winds, and it is probable that heavy losses will result.

The Pongakawa Bridge narrowly escaped destruction. Several telegraph poles have been burned.

AEROA COTTAGE BURNED.

TENANT'S NARROW ESCAPE

Paeroa, Monday.

A cottage near the Puke Road railway crossing in Paeroa, owned by Mrs. Moriarty and occupied by Mr. Johnstone, a railway employee, was totally destroyed by fire at four o'clock on Sunday morning. Mr. Johnstone was in the house by himself at the time and had barely time to escape in Ins night attire. Nothing was saved. No cause can be ascribed for the firs. The furniture was insured for £100 in the Phuenix Office.

Te Aroha, Monday

A fiie occurred at the Te Aroha Dairy' Company's factory at Waihou at five o'clock on Sunday evening. It is stated that some boys were smoking dock leaves in the vicinity of a. small shed near the main factory and evidently were careless in throwing matches about. The result of their experimental smoking resulted in a fire which did damage to the company's property to an estimated amount of £265 10s. The principal damage was sustained by butter paper, salt and boxes.

Inveucargill, Monday

A motor car and garage owned by Mr. D. W. McKay were destroyed by fire on Saturday night. Mr. McKay struck a match, and a sheet of flame burst out. The car was insured for £350 and the building for £150.
