SUNK AT TAHITI.
REMOVING GUNBOAT ZELEE.
When* the R.M.S. Maitai called at Tahiti on her recent passage from San Francisco to Wellington, the port authorities were taking steps to have the sunken gunboat Zelee removed from the channel in the harbour. Owing to the close proximity of the vessel to the wharf, it has been found dangerous to blow the gun boat up. It has, therefore, been decided to pass heavy chains round her and tow her on to the opposite side of the harbour clear of traffic. The services of a large steamer are to be requisitioned to carry out the work. The German steamer Wa'knre, which was sunk by the shells fi\>m the German cruisers, still lies practically submerged. So far no attempt has been made to salve the vessel.
