DESOLATION IN ARMENIA

WHOLESALE MASSACRES. FIFTY THOUSAND HOMELESS. RUSSIANS IN EAST PRUSSIA. GERMAN DASH FOR DOVER FAILS The Turkish campaign has resulted in terrible desolation and wholesale massacres in Armenia. Fifty thousand homeless Armenians are streaming through the valleys in the Caucasus into Russia. Many children have been abandoned on the roads, and adults are dying from cold and hunger. The Turks have invaded Persia, in the hope, it is bslieved, of thus reaching a vulnerable part of the Russian frontier. An Italian newspaper reports that Austro*German forces are contemplating an effort to force their way through Servia and the neutral territory of Bulgaria, with the object of joining hands with the Turks. The allies have been forced to yield some ground near Soissons, on the Aisne, in France. There is little news from the eastern front, except that the Russians are advancing in East Prussia, and have occupied several villages. They have also been successful near Mlawa,

in the north of Poland. The German ports of Hamburg, Lubeck, and Cuxhaven, all in the vicinity of the Kiel Canal, have been declared in a state of siege, It is supposed that this is a precautionary measure against the possibility of a British attack. An effort by German submarines to enter Dover Harbour failed.
