BELGIANS KEPT IN TOWN TO STOP BOMBARDMENT.

FIERCE FIGHTING IN THE VICINITY OF NIEUPORT.

Paius, October 25.

A French torpedo boat arrived off Ostend on Friday. German artillery on the waterfront fired on the torpedo boat, which answered and shelled the Hotel Majestic, where the German staff officers were dining, killing four, including a medical officer. Several other buildings were damaged. The Germans arc endeavouring to prevent tho departure of the inhabitants of Ostend in order to stop the bombardment. Several buildings in Ostend in addition to the Hotel Majestic were damaged by the naval bombardment.

The battle between Ostend and Nieuport continues vigorously. During a violent action in the vicinity of Nieuport, the Belgians, with their backs to the wall, fought like veritable demons. Though they were outnumbered, and their artillery was inferior, they simply refused to acknowledge defeat and repulsed every attack with heavy losses until the arrival of British monitors. British officers were surprised that they were able to hold their positions.
